Barking Abbey School were lucky enough to receive a visit from a very special guest on Wednesday 12th July. Ex-England Lioness and Queen of the Jungle, Jill Scott MBE partnered up with Starling Bank’s ‘Kick on’ campaign, gave the BA football girls an opportunity they would never forget. The day started off with 12 excited year 7-10 girls taking part in a football session led by the academy staff and players. The girls were anticipating the arrival of the special guest throughout the entire morning, whilst the media team from Starling Bank were setting up.

Awards Evening

On Monday 11th July we celebrated the outstanding achievements of students at Barking Abbey School. It filled us with immense pride to be part of this momentous occasion, as we listened to the inspiring stories of perseverance and dedication demonstrated by our young individuals throughout the academic year. A grand total of over 200 awards were presented during the event, encompassing both subject-specific accolades and pastoral certificates. We want to express our gratitude to the staff who nominated the students and to the parents and staff who attended the event.

Summer Music Concert

On Tuesday 4th July the Music Department put on a fantastic event which showcased the students talents. Despite being at the beginning of their lives, they're already displaying courage, commitment, resilience and discipline. It is truly remarkable to see them take the challenge of playing different instruments and styles of music, stand on stage and perform to their best ability. They worked through music from Japan, Brazil and Western Classical and Popular, Mr Samuel (Playa) and Samaa, Charisma and Saffire (Ghost Girls) delighted us with their original pieces.

These action-packed events were held for the Longbridge and Sandringham campuses, bringing together enthusiastic students who showcased their athletic prowess and competitive spirit. From the moment the events kicked off, an atmosphere of excitement filled the air. The level of skill and dedication exhibited by the participants was truly impressive.

Culture Day

Culture Day, held on Friday 23rd, showcased an exemplary celebration of the diverse cultures and vibrant personalities at Barking Abbey. The event was truly remarkable, featuring captivating performances by our students, including singing, dances, religious readings, and captivating poems. Notably, a fashion show, presented by our talented year 12 students that was a real spectacle. Throughout the day, students engaged in thoughtful discussions on cultural themes, embellishing their classrooms with informative displays and captivating artifacts from various continents and explored why tolerance is necessary in 2023. As the day drew to a close, our students participated in a very warm picnic, where they shared food between each other and played until the end of the day.

Matilda The Musical JR

On Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th May Barking Abbey Drama Department premiered their first school musical for many years. Matilda The Musical JR graced our stage and what a show it was! The show was amazing, the hard work of both the staff and students enabled them to deliver a spectacular performance. If you didn't see it, you missed out!

PA Raspberry Pi Competition

Three of our Year 12 Computer Science students entered the PA Raspberry Pi Competition 2023. The annual Raspberry Pi Competition is a celebration of STEM education. Giving schoolchildren the tools and opportunity to invent products that can benefit society. Using engineering and coding skills and a Raspberry Pi microcomputer Responding to pressing energy crises across the world, this year’s theme was accelerating energy transition.

Sir Peter Westmacott

The school was delighted to welcome on Tuesday 16th May one of the UK’s most experienced diplomats to talk to our Year 10 and 12 historians about international relations spanning 5 decades: from the Gulf Oil Crisis in the Middle East in 1973 to the present Ukraine-Russian Conflict. Sir Peter Westmacott was able to regale stories of his time in Turkey, France and most recently Washington DC as the UK ambassador to the US during the historic Barack Obama presidency. The students acquired a real sense of how delicately poised political negotiations can be such as with the Iran nuclear weapons agreement- which involved advanced weeks and months of talks and discussions to iron out any sources of conflict before politicians got around a table. Peter was also the private secretary to our present King during a very difficult time in his relationship with the late Princess Diana (1990-1993) – he reflected even back then what an industrious and hard working man our current monarch was with a schedule and diary incredibly full and exhausting to keep up with.

Jack Petchey Awards

The Jack Petchey evening was a truly unforgettable experience for all the prize winners and attendees. From the moment the compere took to the stage, the audience was fully engaged and encouraged to participate in the celebration. The atmosphere was electric, and the excitement in the room was palpable. As the Barking Abbey prize-winning students gathered in the foyer before the event, they were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet with the newly elected Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, Cllr Faruk Choudhury, and Cllr Kangethe Cabinet member for Educational Attainment & School Improvement.
