  • Emily Atack visits Barking Abbey

    On Friday 4th November, we were lucky enough to be visited by actress and comedian, Emily Atack. Emily and her team visited Barking Abbey School to film for a prime-time BBC Two documentary which will be aired early next year. Emily wanted to visit Barking Abbey School to speak to some of our Sixth Formers about their experiences growing up with social media. Upon hearing about the 'She's Her Own Leader' programme aiming to empower our young women and boost their aspirations, Emily was keen to be involved.

  • BBC Share Your Story

    On Wednesday 2nd November Barking Abbey hosted a visit from the BBC as part of their ‘Share Your Story’ roadshow. This is part of the BBC’s celebrations of being 100 years old and coincides with our 100thBirthday. Grace Adelakun who works in International HR projects for the BBC shared her story about her struggles as a teenager and how she came to her current role at the BBC. This was followed by Mays Baki who was born in Syria and is a journalist for BBC.

  • Black History Month Showcase

    On Friday 21st October 2022, Barking Abbey ran its first BA Does Black History Month Showcase which saw over 40 students perform and highlight Black culture through the mediums of song, dance, poetry and speeches. The event was performed to over 200 people including a Barking and Dagenham Counsellor! All students involved showed great passion and commitment and made the show such a success. A special thank you must go to all students but also to the staff who came forward to support with the event.

  • Old Barkabbeyans’ 100th Anniversary

    Headteacher’s message I was so very proud of the Barking Abbey School community on Saturday, 8th October 2022 when we hosted the Old Barkabbeyans 100th Anniversary at the Longbridge Road Campus. Our PE Department set up cricket matches on the front field and basketball in the Sports Hall which were appreciated by our visitors. The students thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the extra-curricular opportunity, with the glorious weather being a bonus. Members of our Junior Leadership Team were guides for the day, sharing their own experience of school now and hearing about the history of the school from the Old Barkabbeyans and we had an inspirational speech from one of our more recent alumni, Kelvin Akinpelu.

  • Cooking Training from the Professionals

    On Thursday 6th October a company called Hustle Eats came to our Hospitality Department at Sandringham road. They were preparing for a large community event taking place at Manor Junior on Friday 7th. Hustle Eats is run with the aim of introducing young people to the Catering and Hospitality industry as well as providing workshops on how to look after your finances. Company CEO Andrew Williams says “We aim to set up youngsters with the knowledge they need to be young adults as well as introducing them to the world of food and Hospitality”.

  • Anti-Bullying Ambassadors

    On Wednesday 28th September, ten of the anti-bullying ambassadors went to Queen’s College in London for Anti-bullying training. They learnt many things during the time they were there and interacted with many other schools. First, they learnt what bullying behaviour was: intended, repeated and negative. Next, they learnt what bullying can make you feel, represented by the three 'U's - upset, uncomfortable and unsafe.

    What a fantastic set of GCSE results!! Barking Abbey students have outdone themselves this year!! As a school, we are extremely proud of the results, but what makes this more special is the success despite the disruption of Covid-19. The grades achieved by all are testament to what happens if you apply yourself despite all the odds being stacked against you.

  • A Level and BTEC results day

    The school could not be prouder of the achievements of the Class of 2022 today in their A Level and BTEC Results. Despite the setbacks of having no GCSE exams in the Summer of 2020 and the disruption caused by multiple lockdowns and waves of Covid 19 in the last two years, the resilience this group of young adults has shown despite these uncertainties is remarkable and a testament to their strong work ethic, adaptability, and readiness to rise to every challenge they have encountered. The heartiest and most deserved congratulations go out to these young adults today! Well done!

  • Three generations of Maths teachers working together at Barking Abbey School

    Mr Falzon Mr Chokshi was one of the first students I taught at Barking Abbey when I stared teaching back in 1985. Ajay was in a Year 10 set 1 class of extremely bright students. It became apparent within a few weeks of teaching Ajay, that he had the potential to go far with his Mathematics. He was one of the strongest students academically, indeed on one exam that I set, I remember Ajay achieving 100%, which was very impressive as the exam was extremely difficult.

  • BA Dance Stronger Than Ever

    After a year of dance training and months of long rehearsals and projects with various dance artists, Barking Abbey Dance Department put on a phenomenal end of year dance show last week ‘Catch A Vibe 22’, that they performed in The Broadway Theatre – showcasing all that they have been working on, in what felt like one of the quickest academic years since the pandemic. Teaching students from Year 7 to Year 13, the department and artists created 15 versatile pieces of choreography in styles like Hip Hop, Jazz, Commercial, Musical Theatre and Afro. Dance artists such as Kelsey ‘Hydro’ Miller, Koby Turner and Kurtis ‘Kurtyswift’ Agyekum from Homebros, all came to work with the department to train the 7 different year groups and create choreography for the show which we are very grateful for. The students have spent hundreds of hours practising and rehearsing over the months to ensure they were ready for the stage and stage ready they were!
