Department Overview
At Barking Abbey School we aim to provide a high-quality science education which will provide the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all students should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, students should be encouraged to recognize the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.
They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

All 3 sciences follow AQA A level Science specifications. Assessments are composed of three papers, two hours long.
Many of the contexts in the science papers come from peer-reviewed journals, so students will see real data and understand novel contexts you can use in your teaching.
The first 2 papers are content based.
BIOLOGY: The third paper includes a practical section, which focuses on practical skills. However, practical contexts could be used in any of the three papers.
The essay question is a long-running feature of AQA Biology and allows a very wide breadth of coverage.
