Race and Social Justice Celebration Evening
On Thursday 16th October, Barking Abbey School hosted a joyful Race and Social Justice (RSJ) Celebration, honouring the achievements, successes, and ongoing journey of inclusion that continues to shape our school community.
The Sixth Form canteen was transformed into an elegant, welcoming venue, black tablecloths and colourful Diwali decorations designed by the Art Department created a perfect setting for the evening. Staff and students worked tirelessly throughout the afternoon to prepare, decorate, and rehearse, ensuring everything was ready for guests to enjoy a truly memorable event.
The celebration opened with beautiful live piano performances by Mr Audifferin and a Year 10, while JLT students greeted guests and served refreshments with professionalism and warmth.
Our student speakers delivered heartfelt reflections on how RSJ work in the school has influenced their sense of belonging, leadership, and voice. Their authenticity and courage set the tone for the evening.
Our Headteacher shared the story of how RSJ began in our borough, recognising the vision of local leaders who laid the foundation for this vital work. Guest speaker Nicole Director of Learning and Safeguarding Lead from BDSIP, and the borough’s lead RSJ coordinator, followed with an inspiring message about community, collaboration, and hope in a time of challenge.
Guests also enjoyed a 30-minute celebratory video featuring the voices of both staff and students from across the school, highlighting shared learning and progress.
A lively raffle draw and expressions of thanks to all who contributed and everyone who supported behind the scenes brought the evening to a joyful close.
The biggest endorsement came from our guest speaker, who invited our school to host the Borough RSJ event in January. This is a true testament to the commitment and creativity of our students and staff.
From the first note of music to the final applause, the RSJ Celebration was a shining example of unity, pride, and purpose and a reminder of what can be achieved when our community comes together.
