Department overview
MFL education at Barking Abbey will provide all students with the opportunity to communicate and participate in a range of language experiences. We aim:
To inspire our students with engaging and challenging curriculum for all and make them happy and confident when communicating in other languages whether in speaking or in writing.
To encourage a curiosity in other cultures and work outside the English-speaking world.
To build an understanding of the importance of languages beyond the classroom in everyday life.
To help our students appreciate that learning a language is an essential tool for lifelong learning that will broaden horizons and provide opportunities for the future in the world of travel and work.
To contribute to developing our students as global citizens who understand and tolerate cultural differences and can benefit from the richness of a diverse world.
The MFL department promotes the cultural aspects in the classroom as well as our annual trips abroad opportunities for students to get involved and engage with language and culture.
It has never been more important or exciting to be able to speak a foreign language in our increasingly globalised and connected world. Our aim is to equip our students with a greater appreciation and understanding of cultures in addition to the relevant communication skills to take advantage of the modern world of work.

From the start of the course, we are committed to
-Promoting student’s confidence using the language in all four skills

We are proud of our strong relationships with our local primary schools to support students to bridge the transition from primary to secondary school.
