Three generations of Maths teachers working together at Barking Abbey School
13 Jul 2022Mr Falzon Mr Chokshi was one of the first students I taught at Barking Abbey when I stared teaching back in 1985. Ajay was in a Year 10 set 1 class of extremely bright students. It became apparent within a few weeks of teaching Ajay, that he had the potential to go far with his Mathematics. He was one of the strongest students academically, indeed on one exam that I set, I remember Ajay achieving 100%, which was very impressive as the exam was extremely difficult.

BA Dance Stronger Than Ever
12 Jul 2022After a year of dance training and months of long rehearsals and projects with various dance artists, Barking Abbey Dance Department put on a phenomenal end of year dance show last week ‘Catch A Vibe 22’, that they performed in The Broadway Theatre – showcasing all that they have been working on, in what felt like one of the quickest academic years since the pandemic. Teaching students from Year 7 to Year 13, the department and artists created 15 versatile pieces of choreography in styles like Hip Hop, Jazz, Commercial, Musical Theatre and Afro. Dance artists such as Kelsey ‘Hydro’ Miller, Koby Turner and Kurtis ‘Kurtyswift’ Agyekum from Homebros, all came to work with the department to train the 7 different year groups and create choreography for the show which we are very grateful for. The students have spent hundreds of hours practising and rehearsing over the months to ensure they were ready for the stage and stage ready they were!

Sports Day
11 Jul 2022After a long absence Sports Day finally returned to Barking Abbey, spanning over the course of 2 days. Both of which were a success; students were well mannered and showed amazing support for one another, regardless of if they were in the same form. Additionally, the Sport BTEC and A Level Sixth Formers were amazing getting stuck into each and every event, with some even running around with the students to motivate and encourage. It was also nice to see staff who were not PE down to help out and get involved in the day.

Food Bank - Just Giving Page
27 Jun 2022Barking Abbey School, has seen an increase in the number of students and their families that are struggling to pay their bills and buy food. In order to help, and provide additional assistance we have set up a Food bank and family support unit to provide help to families that need it. Donations of items are brought in by members of the school community and local businesses, however we have received requests to be able to facilitate the giving of money for the school to purchase items rather than bring items in directly. All donations will be used to purchase items directly to meet the needs of students, their families and the local community using our service.

Debate Mate Cup Grand Final
20 Jun 2022The KS3 Debate Mate finalists travelled to Central London to take part in the Debate Mate Cup Grand Final at Salesforce Tower. It was the first in-person Grand Final since 2019 in such an impressive and prestigious location, and the students thoroughly enjoyed the day. The reception area has a 70,000-litre aquarium containing around 1,200 fish; the largest privately owned example in the UK and contains over 60 species of fish in an entirely sustainable ecosystem. We were told that the tank is maintained by three part-time divers who clean the rockwork and glass regularly.

Penguin Workshop
20 Apr 2022As part of our partnership with Penguin Random House, staff from Penguin delivered a fantastic workshop focused on publishing and careers to our year 12 English Literature students. The workshop was fun and interactive, and aimed to inspire and inform young people about careers in publishing by bringing to life the different roles available within the industry including editorial, sales, marketing and publicity. Our students discovered all about the different roles available in publishing, by working together to put themselves in the shoes of a Marketer, Editor, Designer and Salesperson. They also heard about the individual career journeys of all of the volunteers at the session and the various entry-level roles available to them.
