PA Raspberry Pi Competition

22 May 2023

Three of our Year 12 Computer Science students entered the PA Raspberry Pi Competition 2023. The annual Raspberry Pi Competition is a celebration of

  • STEM education.
  • Giving schoolchildren the tools and opportunity to invent products that can benefit society.
  • Using engineering and coding skills and a Raspberry Pi microcomputer
  • Responding to pressing energy crises across the world, this year’s theme was accelerating energy transition.

Their project was called ‘The Smart Pingu’. The device created works to encourage home users to:

  • Save on energy to make homes shift to a low-carbon future.
  • The device scans for computers, IoT devices connected to your home internet and in response keeps track of their usage.
  • It can alert the user when they’ve left their devices on for too long, when they’ve connected new appliances and when there are too many appliances over connected.
  • The device will encourage the user to keep an eye out and unplug all these appliances that are constantly using energy.

The Smart Pingu had impressed the judges, as they were selected for the finals, which were held on Wednesday 3rd May 2023, at Convene, 22 Bishopsgate, London.

During the day, the students presented their project to a group of judges, there were chairmen and executives of high-profile companies; Coke, Kellogg’s, C&G, Microsoft, Scottish Power, Rolls Royce and Navy.

Barking Abbey came first in the Sixth Form classification. The students demonstrated great communication skills, enthusiasm and were incredibly inspiring. They won the hearts of the judges.

We are extremely proud of our students, and they made Barking Abbey proud! Well done!
