Safeguarding

Barking Abbey school aims to ensure that:

Appropriate action is taken in a timely manner to safeguard and promote children’s welfare.

All staff are aware of their statutory responsibilities with respect to safeguarding.

Staff are properly trained in recognising and reporting safeguarding issues.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children means:

Protecting children from maltreatment.

Preventing impairment of children’s health or development.

Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.

Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

Safeguarding and child protection is everyones responsibility.

All staff must be aware of:

Our systems which support safeguarding, including this child protection and safeguarding policy, the role and identity of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for each Campus and the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) for each Campus.

The Designated Safeguard Leads (DSL’s)

The DSL is a member of the senior leadership team. As we are a split Campus, each Campus has a DSL. The DSL for the Longbridge Campus is Kat Watkins, Assistant Headteacher for Behaviour and Inclusion.

The DSL for the Sandringham Campus is Daniel Robinson, Assistant Headteacher for Behaviour and Inclusion. The DSL for each Campus takes lead responsibility for child protection and wider safeguarding on that Campus. The DDSL for the Longbridge Campus is Sofia Din. The DDSL for the Sandringham Campus is Roy Wise.

During term time, the DSL and DSL for each Campus, will be available during school hours for staff to discuss any safeguarding concerns.

If the DSL’s and Deputy DSL’s are not available, Tony Roe, Head Teacher, Stephanie Gibson, Head of Campuses and Pete Flaxman, Senior Deputy Head teacher, will be available to support.

Barking Abbey School cares about the mental well being of all of our students and staff.  A healthy school is a happy school.  Whilst the school will do as much as we can to support young people there are some instances where specialist support and guidance may be needed.  There is a lot of support available nationally and within the Borough. The guide below has been designed to signpost parents or families to support networks that are available for young people.

The school does not accept or tolerate any form of sexual harassment or abuse. Further information can be found in the Sexual Harassment Policy within the Safeguarding Policy.

There is no place for extremist views of any kind in our school, whether from internal or external sources. Our students see our school as a safe place where they can explore controversial issues safely and where our teachers encourage and facilitate this and we have a duty to ensure this happens.
