U19 Jeff Saxton Essex Schools & Colleges Cup
Barking Abbey Boys Football Academy added another trophy to their growing collection after being crowned winners of the U19 Jeff Saxton Essex Schools & Colleges Cup.
Abbey progressed through the competition in impressive fashion, receiving a walkover in the opening round against Beauchamps School before securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelmsford College. A dominant 8-0 win against FitzWimarc in the semi-final then booked their place in the final.
The showpiece event, hosted at Dagenham & Redbridge Stadium, saw Barking Abbey face a physical Sigma College side. Abbey started the stronger of the two teams, with Fagbamila causing constant problems for the opposition defence through his pace and movement in behind. The breakthrough arrived in the 23rd minute when Fagbamila raced clear before calmly firing across goal to give Abbey a deserved 1-0 lead. Abbey remained in control for the remainder of the first half, limiting Sigma’s opportunities and going into the break with the advantage.
Abbey began the second half brightly and soon doubled their lead through Harrison Williams, who timed his run perfectly to arrive at the penalty spot and finish confidently following an excellent team move. Despite continuing to dominate possession and chances, a lapse in concentration allowed Sigma College to pull a goal back and reduce the deficit to 2-1, setting up a tense finish.
However, Abbey responded brilliantly in the closing stages. A superb defensive header from captain Vanderpuije sparked a quick attacking move involving Philip and Aboagye Junior, whose clever one-two played Philip through on goal. Showing great composure, Philip chipped the ball over the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner to seal a memorable 3-1 victory.
The triumph is a testament to the hard work, commitment and quality shown by the players and staff throughout the season, capping off another outstanding campaign for the academy.
