Girls Treble Success
Barking Abbey Girl's Football Academy completed a hugely successful season which has seen the team win an amazing treble!
After 10 months and a massive 44 games played, the girls hard work and determination was rewarded in the last 3 games of the season. First was a huge game against Peterborough who Abbey knew they had to beat to secure the National Football Youth League South Premier Women title, Abbey had to do it the hard way and went a goal behind after a 40-yard strike hit the back of the net. Abbey’s belief never faltered though, and an outstanding 2nd half saw the girls score 4 goals, including a 30-yard volley from Nell Doe and header from Ronnie Richards to win 4-1 and complete the 1st part of their treble.
Just a week later Abbey travelled to Accrington Stanley FC to play against Future Pro Academy for the ECFA National Women’s Premier Cup. Zoe Tryfonos’ delightful finish put the gloss on a dominant display from Abbey who won 5-2 with Lucy Bacon scoring twice and further goals from Charlotte Walsh and Motunrayo Ojobaro.
Finally, Abbey finished their season at the home of Derby County FC, competing for the National Football Youth League Women’s Trophy against Bolton Wanderers. Abbey again went a goal behind after just 30 seconds but goals from Betty Larkin and Nell Doe put Abbey ahead at half time. The Trophy was wrapped up following 2nd half goals from Nell Doe, Aryanna Adesan and a double from Megan Gerrish who completed the scoring with a 25-yard lob over the goalkeeper to complete a 6-1 victory.
Girls Coach Mike Lowne had this to say about the season, ‘This season has been all about the squad and our togetherness, playing 2 semi-finals on the same day, splitting the squad between York and Chatham, everyone playing a part in 2 cup finals and winning. It has been a testament to the strength of our squad, winning a league title is always about consistency and there are always going to be bumps in the road, the girls have shown tremendous character to achieve a historic treble.’
We are also proud to have helped 10 of our Year 13 student-athletes secure scholarships in the USA, graduates; Evie Carvell, Millie D’Ath, Riley Whale, Charlotte Long, Chloe Scales, Ianna Msekwa, Bessie Simpson, Megan Gerrish and Maya Bethelmie will all be attending colleges in the US. Well done girls, we are proud of you!
