Black History Showcase

14 Nov 2024

On Thursday 24th October, Barking Abbey celebrated Black History Month with a showcase. The event began with an inspiring welcome from the Mr Roe, who highlighted the importance of Black History Month as a time to reflect on the contributions, struggles, and achievements of Black individuals throughout history.

The singers covered popular songs from influential Black artists. Their renditions of songs stirred the audience, with heartfelt solos and harmonies that emphasized themes of resilience, hope, and pride.

Barking Abbey dancers also took to the stage, performing energetic routines that blended traditional Afro + Caribbean dance moves with hip-hop and their performances brought a modern twist to traditional movements, showcasing the power and influence of African + Caribbean heritage in contemporary dance.

The poetry segments featured students who wrote their own original pieces about identity and strength in the face of adversity, which resonated deeply with the crowd, who clapped and cheered as the words of resilience filled the room.

The event concluded with a message of gratitude from the organizers, who emphasized the importance of continuing to honour Black history beyond just one month.  All funds raised from this event were given to our charity of choice, which was the ‘Sickle Cell and Young Stroke Survivors’ charity.

Overall, the Black History Month event was a powerful reminder of the richness of Black culture and the importance of unity and awareness. The event left students and staff alike with a renewed appreciation for the resilience, creativity, and contributions of Black people throughout history.
