Department Overview

Passionate about Photography? Interested in seeing how Photography can be applied to design, graphics, multi-media communications or even for setting up your own website or business? Barking Abbey Photo Department are currently recruiting. We have had a really successful few years, boasting 100% A*- C at A'Level.  YOU have a very good chance of getting an excellent grade, preparing you for the world of University, Apprenticeship and the world of Work. Current pupils have exhibited in local galleries as well as in central London. The creative and collaborative nature of the course is designed to give you real experience working with practising artists, musicians and design/ crafts people so you can use and learn skills that go beyond the classroom. Pupils also made a music video using state of the art cameras, lenses and drone cameras.

Photography is offered at A ' Level  and we are fortunate enough to have fantastic facilities including state of the art DSLR Cameras, Video cameras, scanners and specialised printing, a private studio with lighting, flash and back drop facilities and a Dark Room for B/w printing. Lessons have a predominantly practical focus and are designed to ensure all students are challenged and able to achieve their full potential.  We also strive to raise the profile of Photography as an academic subject.  Students are expected to discuss, analyse, debate and write about Photography and so become versatile creatives, with experience of working as an individual and as a collaborative team.  We encourage students to develop their creative thinking skills via a variety of  activities ranging from trips to London and if you're lucky, farther afield.

Past pupils have been accepted to a range of courses and Universities including the prestigious Falmouth University (excellent for Photography), Games Design at Greenwich, Media & Communications at Coventry, Fashion & Menswear at Central Saint Martins. One of our current super stars, is applying for History of Art at Cambridge whilst another is a published Graphic Novel Artist with Sweat Drop Studios, completing her final year at Middlesex University. MAny of our Photogrpahy students go into other fields such as Architecture, Engineering, Graphic Design, Computing & Digital Media, Criminology, Pscychology and even Mid-Wifery.
