Grow the Game
“Grow the Game” funding was established by the Football Association and was set up to support the growth of under-represented groups (Females and SEND) in the community for everyone who loves the game. Consequently, this allowed the development of “Barking Abbey Hammers” which is a club (based at our Longbridge Campus) targeted at SEND young people and is in collaboration with West Ham United Football Foundation. This club, now gives it’s participants the chance to get on the “competition” and “talent” pathways, with young people being potentially identified for England selection and perhaps playing for their country one day.
In September 2019, Barking Abbey student Nimrah was deployed into a volunteering placement working primarily with the U12’s, to support the opportunities this funding provides. Nimrah has undertaken this volunteering every Saturday since, and has really impressed the FA with the work she has been doing, and has now be given the chance to obtain bursary funding so she can train to become a Level 1 Coach, and such funding has also helped her to “grow”.
